The Cedar Mill Historical Society is gearing up to expand our activities and outreach. We hope you’ll honor us with a donation on Giving Tuesday by clicking the Donate button above.
Why? Research shows that “placemaking” activities, networks, and public spaces anchored in arts and culture enhance the social, economic, and even health outcomes of communities. Think of the resurgence of the Pearl in downtown Portland over the past 30+ years, for example.
In pursuit of a more inviting, authentic, and livable Cedar Mill, we’ve worked for the following achievements:
- Registering as a 501(c)(3) non-profit
- Assembling a collection of documents, stories, and artifacts about the history of this place dating back to Native American tribes and Oregon Trail pioneers
- Displaying the collection in the old Milltowner shopping center at the corner of Cornell & Saltzman
- Creating a History Museum in the old Milltowner shopping center at the corner of Cornell & Saltzman
- Holding the Cedar Mill Cider Festival every fall since 2006 on the grounds of the John Quincy Adams Young House, with neighborhood Boy Scouts manning cider presses, live music, a food cart, a children’s playground, booths hosted by community organizations, a display of our collection, and – this year – an oral history booth
- Hosting meetings of the Cedar Mill History Club at the Ackerly
- Giving an interview about our activities on TVCTV’s “City Talk” that will be aired next year
- Scaling up our Board with five talented and committed neighborhood residents
But we’re keen to be more visible and active in the community. Your donation will help us to:
- Develop a membership program with regular activities and a newsletter
- Scale up and build the capacity of our Board and volunteer
- Find a permanent home for our collection where the public and students at area schools can learn about and celebrate Cedar Mill’s past
- Complete our new website with stories and images of our history
